In this milestone anniversary year, we reflected on the past 25 years of advancing equity in design with an eye toward the future.

The Hideo Sasaki Foundation is a nonprofit established in 2000 to continue Hideo’s legacy of collaborative design. In 2018, we launched a new chapter refocused on equity in design. We advance our mission through research and grants, public programming, and design education.

Hideo Sasaki’s legacy of collaborative design lives on in the firm he founded in Watertown in 1953. Sasaki currently has five offices: Boston, Denver, New York, Los Angeles, and Shanghai.

Hideo Sasaki’s firm has designed many legacy projects since it’s founding in 1953.
  • Beginning in the late 1950s, and in collaboration with SOM, Sasaki developed a master plan and designed the landscapes for the Upjohn Corporation in Kalamazoo, MI.
  • Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island, SC, was the first destination resort built in the United States after World War II. Sasaki created the master plan for its village of Harbourtown, and provided architecture for the lighthouse, condominiums, and shops.
  • Greenacre Park in New York City is an intimate urban park offering tranquility and repose since 1971. Sasaki provided both the architecture and landscape architecture for the park. In 2018, the park joined the National Register of Historic Places.
  • In the 1970s, Sasaki transformed a parking lot into Boston Waterfront Park. It quickly became a beloved seaside destination, connecting the North End back to the sea. Following its success, Sasaki created a comprehensive plan for the entire waterfront.
